Dr. Nicolas Abatzoglou is Professor and ex-Head of the Department of Chemical & Biotechnological Engineering of the Université de Sherbrooke. He is Adjunct Professor at the University of Saskatchewan and Laval University. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.?He is a specialist in Process Engineering involving particulate systems. He is the Director of the GRTP-C&P (Group of Research on Technologies and Processes in the Chemical & Pharmaceutical Industry).?Since May 2008, he is the holder of the Pfizer Industrial Research Chair in Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) in Pharmaceutical Engineering.?He served as one of the Leaders?in Canada’s NCE Network BioFuelNet on Biorefining.? D. Grant Allen, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and his M.A.Sc. and B.A.Sc. (8T1) from UofT. Professor Allen’s area of research interest is in bioprocess engineering, with particular application to the treatment of aqueous and gaseous emissions and utilizing wastes for energy and chemical production. He has over 100 publications and has supervised 27 doctoral students and 39 masters theses. ?He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Chemical Institute of Canada. ?He has led several environmental research consortia involving faculty and students from a range of disciplines and industrial partners from Canada and around the world (USA, Brazil, Japan, NZ). ?He joined the Faculty at UofT in 1987. ?From 2001 to 2003 he was the Director and, before that, Associate Director, of the Pulp & Paper Centre at UofT and was also the Associate Chair (Graduate) from 2003 to 2007. ?He served as Vice-Dean (Undergraduate) for the Faculty from 2007 to 2011 and was appointed Department Chair in 2011. ? He was also President in the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering in 2008/09. ?He worked with Esso Petroleum’s Process Control group in 1983 and spent his research leave in 1994 with Weyerhaeuser Co. in Tacoma WA, working on biofiltration of air pollutants from wood products emissions. ? In 2011, he spent a research leave at a SCION, a crown research organization in New Zealand, working with their green processing team on waste management in future biorefineries.

Dr. S. Lisa Biswal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University in Houston, TX and leads the Soft Matter Engineering Laboratory. Dr. Biswal’s research focuses on the fundamental understanding and application of soft matter systems. Research examples include directed assembly of colloidal systems with magnetic fields, nanomaterials for energy, and the understanding and manipulation of microscale fluids for oil processes. Dr. Heather Dettman has been a research scientist with Natural Resources Canada for 27 years. During this time she has developed expertise in the characterization of heavy oil and oil sands bitumen, and has applied this knowledge to specific research topics including refinery corrosion, petroleum upgrading and refining, refinery process upsets, bioprocessing, and diesel fuel analysis. Most recently, Dr. Dettman and her group at CanmetENERGY have developed oil spill test facilities and are studying the behavior of crude oils including diluted bitumen products when spilled in water environments under Canadian climatic conditions.

Dr. Elizabeth Gillies is a Professor and Faculty Scholar in the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University. Her research focuses on the design, synthesis, and application of functional polymers, in particular for biomedical challenges such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. Her group has developed new approaches for preparing biodegradable poly(ester amide)s, introduced new mechanisms for controlling and triggering the degradation of polymers in specific environments, and has studied assemblies of these materials and their interactions with biological systems. She has been recognized by awards including a 2017 E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship from NSERC, a Canada Research Chair in Biomaterials Synthesis, a Fallona Interdisciplinary Science Award, and a Petro Canada Young Innovator Award. Prof. Frank Gu is a Canada Research Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Gu received his Ph.D. from Queen’s University, Canada, where he majored in chemical engineering and was awarded a Canada Graduate Scholarship from Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Following completion of his graduate program, he was awarded an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship to pursue his research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School. In July 2008, Dr. Gu joined Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Gu has established a world-class research program in Nanotechnology Engineering, with important advances in medical and life science applications. Leading-edge projects have produced new materials and tools for targeted drug delivery, rapid pathogen detection, and passive water treatment. His research has had tangible impacts on his field and industry, including mucoadhesive nanoparticles that will revolutionize the treatment of Dry Eye Disease, and photocatalytic water treatment technologies that are the core technology of H2nanO, a Canadian startup company. Throughout his 20-year career Fred has worked in a number of Process Safety and Risk Management roles working both for NOVA Chemicals and as consultant.? Past projects have ranged from Loss Forecasting to Ethylene Detonation Field Trials to the Development of Risk Criteria for High Consequence Low Probability Scenarios as well as Risk Criteria for Short-Term/Peak Risk activities.
Fred earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Chemistry (Hons). from the University of Calgary, as well as a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry/Materials Science, also from the University of Calgary.

Prof. Fa??al Larachi's research aims at devising micro/multifunctional processes and materials in the areas of (bio-)energy, mineral resources and the environment with an emphasis on upgrading/conversion of unconventional fossil energy/residual biomass, implementing GHG mitigation through CO2 capture/storage and solving aqueous and interfacial chemistry issues in mineral beneficiation. He has co-authored 350+ journal papers, 3 books and 20+ plenary/keynote lectures in international conferences. He served as Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, and as Member of the Editorial or Advisory Boards for the journals Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Chemical Engineering & Processing: Process Intensification, and Indian Chemical Engineer. His research contributions have been recognized in various ways, including the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair endowment, twice-awardee of the NSERC Discovery Acceleration Supplement, recipient of the 2012 UL Research Summa Award, and he has been selected twice as a “Carbon Capture Sequestration” Leader in Canada by the Carbon Capture Journal. Dr. Philip Lenart is a Research Engineering Team Lead with the ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company in Houston, Texas. ?Dr. Lenart received a BSE in Chemical Engineering and a BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and his PhD from Princeton University in Chemical Engineering studying thermodynamic simulation as a National Science Foundation (NSF) graduate fellow. ?He joined ExxonMobil in 2006 and has had a career developing technology in both downstream and upstream research organizations. ?Focusing on process model development, Dr. Lenart has developed computational techniques applied to onboard reforming, coal gasification, reforming fired heaters, reactor internals, and heavy oil processing, linking models to lab, pilot, and commercial-scale performance. ?Dr. Lenart currently is the Process Models Team Lead within Production Technologies in the Upstream Research Company.

Dr. Jacob Masliyah received his BSc (Chemical Engineering) in 1964 from the University College London, his MSc from the University of New Brunswick while working under the supervision of Dr. Frank Steward and a PhD in 1970 under the supervision of Dr. Norman Epstein from the University of British Columbia. He has been a professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta since 1977. In recognition of his outstanding achievements and distinction in scholarly research, teaching and service to the community, Dr. Masliyah was appointed as a Distinguished University Professor in 2000.
Over the course of his forty year career, Dr. Masliyah’s research has spanned a wide range of topics, ranging from fluid mechanics to fluid-particle dynamics and more recently his research primarily focuses in the area of colloidal and interfacial phenomena as applied to bitumen extraction from oil sands. In part, Dr. Masliyah credits his success in his field to the very active collaboration and participation with academic and industrial researchers. With the assistance of NSERC and industrial partners, Dr. Masliyah established a first ?rate laboratory in the areas of colloidal and interfacial science which was used successfully to understand the basic processes governing bitumen recovery from oil sands. In 1996, with collaboration with Syncrude Canada Ltd., Dr. Masliyah helped establish the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Engineering, the first of its kind. Subsequently, the Industrial Chair was expanded to include all the major oil sands surface mining operators. In 1999, together with Dr. Jan Czarnecki of Syncrude, Dr. Masliyah received the NSERC University-Industry Synergy R & D Partnerships Award for best practices in university-industry collaboration. In 2008, the industrial chair was further expanded under the leadership of Dr. Zhenghe Xu.
Dr. Masliyah is author and co-author of two books in the area of electrokinetic and colloid transport phenomena and he co-authored two handbooks on oil sands with Drs. Jan Czarnecki and Zhenghe Xu. He published over 350 refereed publications. Dr. Masliyah is also the recipient of many awards, namely: The Century of Achievement Award for significant contributions to the field of chemical engineering and the R.S. Jane Memorial Lecture Award from the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering. He is the first Canadian who simultaneously held an NSERC Industrial Research Chair and a Canada Senior Research Chair.
From the University of Alberta, Dr. Masliyah received the Gordin Kaplan Award in research excellence, the Rutherford Undergraduate Teaching Award and the University Cup. In 2013, Dr. Masliyah was the recipient of Honorary Degree in Science. On the provincial level, he received in 2005 the APEGA Frank Spragins Technical Award and the Alberta Centennial medal. In 2015, he was named member of the Alberta Order of Excellence. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering, the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Masliyah is the recipient of Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal and, in 2008, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. On the international stage, in 2011, Dr. Masliyah became an Associate Foreign Fellow of the United States National Academy of Engineering.

Dr. K. Nandakumar is currently Gordon A and Mary Cain Chair Professor at Louisiana State University. Prior to this he was the GASCO Chair Professor at The Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi. Formerly he was in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada for nearly 25 years. Dr. Nandakumar received his B. Tech from Madras University in 1973, M. Sc from University of Saskatchewan in 1975 and his PhD from Princeton University in 1979. He has received the Alexander von Humnboldt research fellowship from the German government in 1989-90 and the Albright & Wilson Americas Award from the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering in 1991 for distinguished contributions to chemical engineering before reaching the age of 40. Dr. Nandakumar was elected as Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada in 1991 and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada in 2006 and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2007. He has received, from the University of Alberta, the McCalla Professorship (1992), the Killam Annual professorship (2001) for excellence in research and the Rutherford Award (2001) for excellence in teaching. He has also received the Excellence in Education award (2002) from APEGGA, the professional engineering association in Alberta. He was Editor-in-Chief of The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering during 2005-2009. James B. Rawlings received the B.S. from the University of Texas and the Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, both in Chemical Engineering. ?He spent one year at the University of Stuttgart as a NATO postdoctoral fellow and then joined the faculty at the University of Texas. ?He moved to the University of Wisconsin in 1995 and is?currently the Steenbock Professor of Engineering and W. Harmon Ray Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and the co-director of the Texas-Wisconsin-California Control Consortium (TWCCC).
Professor Rawlings's research interests are in the areas of chemical process modeling, monitoring and control, nonlinear model predictive control, moving horizon state estimation, and molecular-scale chemical reaction engineering. ?He has written numerous research articles and coauthored three textbooks: "Modeling and Analysis Principles for Chemical and Biological Engineers" (2013) with Mike Graham, "Model Predictive Control: Theory and Design" (2009), with David Mayne, and "Chemical Reactor Analysis and Design Fundamentals," 2nd ed. (2012), with John Ekerdt.
In recognition of his research and teaching, Professor Rawlings has received several awards including: election to the National Academy of Engineering; "Doctor technices honoris causa" from the Danish Technical University; The inaugural High Impact Paper Award from the International Federation of Automatic Control; The Ragazzini Education Award from the American Automatic Control Council; The Computing in Chemical Engineering Award and Excellence in Process Development Award from the AICHE; The Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award, a WARF Named Professorship, and the Byron Bird Award for Excellence in a Research Publication, from the University of Wisconsin. Kevin Reid is currently the Project Leader for Extraction Equipment & Process R&D within Syncrude Canada Ltd. ?He has completed BSc. and MSc. degrees at the University of Alberta and his PhD. work in the Whittle Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. ?Kevin has been using both cold flow modeling and CFD to solve fluid dynamic problems of industrial interest for 17 years, with designs having been applied successfully at both Syncrude and within Rolls Royce aero-engines.

Dr. Andreas Richter is the head of the research group “CFD-Modeling of High-Temperature Processes” at the Institute of Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering, TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The research of his group covers the modeling of high-temperature processes on all length scales, from the chemically reacting particles to the complete reactor. The development of models and strategies for the simulation of high-temperature reactors comprises fixed-bed, fluidized-bed, and entrained-flow systems in metallurgy and chemical engineering. Fundamental research on subsystems is taken into account for the development of advanced sub-models. These sub-models are integrated in the reactor models for an improved simulation of fluid-solid systems. Based on this advanced modeling, optimization strategies are applied for a rapidly accelerated adaption of existing technologies and the development of new technologies. Dr. Richter studied mechanical engineering at the Dresden University of Technology, and finished his PhD in Dresden in the field of aero-acoustical simulations. He has authored and co-authored more than 80 journal and conference publications.

George Shimizu was born in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1966. He received his BS from the University of Winnipeg and his PhD from the University of Windsor working with Professor Stephen Loeb. He carried out postdoctoral research with Sir Fraser Stoddart at the University of Birmingham and then was a Research Associate at the National Research Council of Canada working with John Ripmeester. He began an independent career in 1998 at the University of Calgary where he was promoted to Full Professor in 2007.
He has given over 100 invited talks, received the Strem Award for Inorganic Chemistry from the Canadian Society for Chemistry and has received a Discovery Accelerator from NSERC. He sits on several editorial advisory boards for chemistry journals and the MOF Commission of the International Zeolite Association.
His research interests include the syntheses and applications of metal organic frameworks. In 2015, Dr. Shimizu was the lead applicant for a successful national training program on carbon capture, the NSERC CREATE Program on Carbon Capture.

Kevin J. Smith is Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering and member of the Clean Energy Research Center at the University of British Columbia. He received his Ph.D. from McMaster University, working with the late Professor Bob Anderson and has > 25 years experience in applied catalysis research. His research is focused on the Canadian energy scene, with primary interests in C1-catalysis and upgrading Canadian oilsands. He holds three patents and has published widely in the areas of alcohol synthesis from syngas, methane conversion and the hydroconversion of heavy oils. He received the Canadian Catalysis Lectureship Award in 2012 and is the recipient of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers Medal for Distinction in Engineering Education (2006) and the APEGBC Teaching Award for Excellence in Engineering and Geoscience (2005). He was elected Fellow of the CIC in 2004 and Fellow of Engineers Canada in 2013. He served as Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at UBC from 2001 to 2009, is past chair of the Catalysis Division of the CIC and is current Chair of the Canadian Catalysis Foundation. He is on the Editorial Board of Catalysis Reviews – Science and Engineering and the open access journal Catalysts.

Dr. Arun K. Tangirala is a Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras. His research interests span the fields of process control and monitoring, system identification, data sciences and renewable energy systems. His research group has been actively involved in solving cutting edge problems of causality analysis, network reconstruction, multiscale identification, sparse optimization (compressive sensing)-based identification and control. In addition, Prof. Tangirala has been pursuing several multi-disciplinary projects ranging from estimation of travel times in public transport systems to reconstruction of enzymatic networks through in-house and international collaborations. He obtained his Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras in 1996 and his Doctoral degree in Process Control & Monitoring from the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in the year 2001. He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras in Dec. 2004. Prof. Tangirala is a recipient of prestigious teaching & research awards and international fellowships. Dr. Venkataraman Thangadurai is full professor of chemistry at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom. He received his BSc from Sacred Heart College in Tirupattur, India in 1989 and his MSc from Muthurangam Government Arts College in Vellore, India in 1991. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1999 and did his PDF at the University of Kiel, Germany. He received a prestigious PDF fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn, Germany. In 2004, Dr. Thangadurai received his Habilitation degree from the University of Kiel before starting his independent career in Calgary in 2005. In 2016, he received the prestigious Keith Laidler Award from the Canadian Society of Chemistry for his outstanding contributions to physical chemistry. His current research activities include discovery of novel ceramic membranes and mixed ion and electron conductors for all-solid-state-Li batteries, solid oxide fuel cells, solid oxide electrolysis cells, and electrochemical gas sensors.?

Dr. Eric Vignola is team leader, polyethylene product research and development at NOVA Chemicals, a leading supplier of polyethylene resins in the Americas. His areas of expertise include rigid, flexible and foam packaging, nanocomposites, and interpolymer rheology modifiers. Recently, Dr. Vignola and his team have developed fast cycle time resins for water bottle closures, a novel polyethylene for large rotomolded tanks and a family of sealant products for the food packaging and heavy duty sack markets. Prior to joining NOVA Chemicals in 2003, Dr. Vignola worked as a research officer for the National Research Council of Canada in the areas of electroplating and electrocomposites. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the Université de Montréal, an MBA from the University of Florida, and a PhD in Energy and Materials Science from the INRS of the Université du Québec. In addition, he is author/co-author of three patents, with several more pending.

Vince is the Process Innovation manager at Canadian Natural Resources Horizon and Albian mine sites. He joined Jacob Masliyah’s oil sands research team after a degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Alberta. During his research tenure, he developed a laboratory hydrotransport extraction loop and novel concept of oily bubble for enhancing bitumen floatation. ?Following his graduation he joined CNRL at early stages of process design and construction of Horizon mine site.?

Fran?oise Winnik was born and educated in France where she earned a Diplome d’Ingénieur chimiste of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Mulhouse. She obtained her PhD in organic chemistry and photochemistry. After post-doctoral studies in medical genetics, she worked for 12 years as a research scientist in the Xerox Research Center of Canada. She joined McMaster University (Hamilton, ON) in 1993 as an Associate Professor in Chemistry and Physics. Since 2000, she holds a joint position as professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemistry of the Université de Montréal. Her expertise encompasses the chemistry of water soluble, amphiphilc, synthetic and natural polymers, their self-assembly in water and their applications in nanomedicine and as delivery vehicles. She was among the first to study the physico-chemical properties of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) “PNIPAM” in water. Her group has pioneered the applications of microcalorimetry, such as Pressure perturbation calorimetry (PPC) and fluorescence techniques to study aqueous polymer solutions. As a tribute to her contributions to Chemistry, she was awarded the 2006 Clara Benson award of the Canadian Institute of Canada. She is Executive Editor of Langmuir, the ACS journal of surface and colloid science.

Harvey Yarranton is a Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary and is the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Heavy Oil Properties and Processing. He received his B.Sc. (1985) and Ph.D. (1997) degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta. Between degrees, he worked for Dome Petroleum Ltd. and Amoco Canada Ltd. as a petroleum engineer. His research interests include the phase behavior and properties of heavy oils and solvents, the fundamentals and treatment of water-in-oil emulsions, and oil sands extraction and froth treatment. He is an associate editor for SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering.?
